Jesse L. Brown

Jesse L. Brown

October 13, 1926 - December 4, 1950

Jesse L. Brown, was the first black pilot in the U.S. Navy, so yeah he was MAVERICK.

Born in Hattiesburg, MS Brown the aviation bug bit him early.

At six he attended his first air show and from there he knew he wanted to be a pilot.

One problem, there weren't any black pilots at the time.

Discrimination being the standard in the US during that time, Blacks were simply not allowed to fly. You think that stopped Ensign Jesse L. Brown?

Hell no!

Brown with a degree from Ohio State University in hand  Brown enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946, becoming a midshipman. He would later earn his pilot wings on October, 21, 1948 in the midst of an abundance of press coverage.

Jesse L. Brown accomplished all this while facing strong opposition, racism, prejudice and downright hate.

But a Maverick is just that, and he succeeded a becoming the first black pilot in the US Navy.

This dream was not deterred by obstacles, but rather propelled by other black MAVERICKS like Bessie Coleman.

However, above the cloud of racism, prejudice, and segregation light existed. Jesse L. Brown while being a Maverick for his accomplishments is also known by the events that happened on December 4, 1950...

A riveting story of war and courage Ensign Jesse L. Brown, died when his plane’s fuel line took a bullet from Chinese Forces during the Korean War. Brown survived the crash of his aircraft but unfortunately was pinned under the wreckage.

Thomas Hudner a white US Naval pilot and Browns’ wingman crash-landed his own plane to try and save his wingman. His efforts were futile.

Brown asked his friend to deliver a message of love to his life, Daisy, and he perished with his Corsair plane in North Korea.

Today, in Black Maverick History we salute Ensign Jesse L. Brown for his maverick commitment to follow his dreams.

It was previous Mavericks like Bessie Coleman who empowered him to relentless pursue his dreams in spite of systematic obstacles.

It is that spirit we channel today at Maverick Innovation, LLC to consistently DISRUPT. and create new opportunities for others.

DOYOU.
